Both Manchester United and Olympique Lyonnais are striking a bullish tone ahead of their meet-up in the quarter-final of the UEFA Europa League.
Manchester United are having a difficult Premier League campaign under Ruben Amorim. However, the Red Devils are one of the favourites to win the Europa League, which is the only way that the club will secure European qualification for next season. Lyon, however, are in the running for European qualification next season, regardless of their fate in the Europa League this season. Paulo Fonseca’s side are currently fifth and just one point off the Champions League qualification places.
However, despite differing dynamics in their respective domestic campaigns, Manchester United carry great confidence as they prepare to head to France for the first leg this Thursday. “It’s a very good team. We know some of them but I don’t think we have to focus on them. It’s more about us, what we’re going to do […] of course, it’s not going to be easy, but I think we are way better than them. We all know the importance of this game, we will go there with the winning mentality,” said André Onana in the build-up to the match.
However, Lyon, coming off the back of a 2-1 win over fellow European contenders Lille OSC, are also confident. “We are ready to wage war against them,” declared OL’s Rayan Cherki, who currently leads the assist charts in the Europa League.
