Sport Bild reports that Bayer Leverkusen still expects head coach Xabi Alonso to stay at the club beyond this, despite him yet to make a clear commitment.
The former midfielder is regularly involved with planning for next season, whether that be decisions on transfers or pre-season planning, such as a potential trip to Brazil, as well as training camps. Internally, there is no doubt that he will leave.
However, Alonso has revealed to people at the club that a transfer has been on his mind, but the potential move would not involve leaving before the expiry of his contract in 2026. The only destination is Real Madrid, yet, like Alonso at Leverkusen, the future of Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is still up in the air, with an extension for the Italian also a potential option.
This has not deterred Leverkusen, and it is said there are expected to be talks at the end of the season about the possibility of Alonso staying at the club long-term.
