Chelsea have secured the signing of Sporting CP’s Dario Essugo, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The deal follows Chelsea’s €48 million transfer for Geovany Quenda from Sporting. Quenda will join in 2026, but Essugo arrives this summer.
The 20-year-old Portuguese midfielder is currently on loan at La Liga club Las Palmas, where he has made 17 appearances this season.
Chelsea reportedly paid over €22m for Essugo, highlighting his immense potential and talent.
Essugo’s journey to Chelsea
Essugo made headlines back in March 2021 when he became Sporting’s youngest-ever debutant at just 16 years and 16 days.
He made his debut against Vitoria de Guimaraes, marking the start of his professional career.
Essugo set another record as Portugal’s youngest player in the Champions League when he played against Ajax later the same year.
Fe became Sporting’s youngest-ever starter at 16 years, 11 months and 17 days in February 2022, breaking a record previously held by Luis Figo.
This signing is part of Chelsea’s long-term plan to secure the best young talents for the future.
Essugo’s qualities and potential
Essugo has shown great tackling ability and composure beyond his years. His maturity on the pitch has drawn comparisons to some of Portugal’s best holding midfielders.
He has been a regular for Las Palmas this season, gaining valuable experience in La Liga.
The 20-year-old is a Portugal U21 international and had already made 25 senior appearances for Sporting before moving to Spain.
Chelsea’s investment in Essugo shows their commitment to building a youthful and dynamic squad. His profile aligns well with the club’s evolving midfield structure.

If he adapts well to the Premier League, Essugo could become a key player for Chelsea.
