AS Monaco’s hopes of progressing from their UEFA Champions League play-off encounter against Benfica were dealt a blow on Wednesday night as the Portuguese side beat Les Monégasques and take a 1-0 advantage back to the Estadio Da Luz.
Vangelis Pavlidis got the only goal of the game. Monaco had to play much of the second half with ten men after Moatasem Al-Musrati was sent off. The Libyan mimicked the awarding of a yellow card and was instead shown a second yellow, and a red, himself.
The damage was limited with Les Monégasques not falling further behind. Benfica manager Bruno Lage bemoaned the lack of “killer instinct” as Monaco prepare to head to Portugal with the hope of reversing the deficit. “We did everything to change the score and that is what I told the players, ‘it is only 1-0’. We are disappointed but we will see what happens in the return leg. It remains open,” said Hütter in a post-match press conference, attended by Get French Football News.
