Since the start of the winter transfer window, former Heidenheim winger Jan-Niklas Beste has been linked with a return to Germany, with a number of Bundesliga clubs keen on his signature.
According to Sky Germany, Freiburg have now moved ahead of the likes of Stuttgart, RB Leipzig and Borussia Mönchengladbach in the race to sign the Benfica man.
The Breisgau outfit have already held talks with the player, but have yet to reach an agreement with either Benfica or Benfica, the report claims.
It is unclear exactly how Freiburg would make room for him in the starting line-up.
The Bundesliga outfit are already well-equipped on the wing, with Ritsu Doan and Vincenzo Grifo among their key players.
