Speaking to Sport Bild (via @bvbnewsblog), Borussia Dortmund head coach Nuri Șahin has commented on striker Serhou Guirassy and why they signed him in the summer.
The 28-year-old joined from Stuttgart in the summer for €18m but missed the opening games of the season due to injury. However, once he was fit enough to play he hit the ground running with six goals in six games. On Guirassy, Șahin said:
“He has a similar profile to Robert Lewandowski and Harry Kane. They are not only defined by their goals, but also change the statics of the game. They know when to drop, how to create links on the pitch.”
In the summer, Dortmund had three senior strikers with Niclas Füllkrug, Sebastien Haller and Youssoufa Moukoko all at the club, however after the arrival of Guirassy, all three ended up leaving. On Dortmund’s summer pursuit of Guirassy, Șahin then said:
“We really wanted to get him, that was already clear when I was still assistant coach. It was clear to me that if we were to bring in a new striker, it had to be Serhou.”
Guirassy was a revelation last season at Stuttgart. The Guienaen was one of the key players in them finishing second in the Bundesliga last season. Guirassy scored 30 goals in 30 games for VfB and formed a deadly partnership with Deniz Undav up top, however, despite the club qualifying for the Champions League, Guirassy left and was replaced by Ermedin Demirovic.
