Manchester City are in talks with Belgian outfit Anderlecht over a move for the highly-promising Sergio Gomez, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Per the report, City have scouted Gomez extensively and are keen to lure him to the Etihad Stadium before the transfer window shuts on September 1.
Gomez, who majorly plays as a left-back now, is also capable of operating in midfield whether it be central or attacking and his versatility at such a young age has attracted interest from the reigning Premier League champions.
The Spaniard made his first-team debut with Borussia Dortmund in the 2018/19 campaign but after failing to secure regular playing time at the Signal Iduna Park, he spent the next two seasons on loan at Huesca who he helped secure a return to La Liga.
Consequently, Gomez was then snapped up by Anderlecht on a four-year deal just over 12 months ago and played a key role for Les Mauves et Blancs en route to their third-place finish in the Belgian division last time out.
However, it looks as if his time in Brussels is set to come to an early end with Manchester City now vying for his signature.
Having reportedly pulled out of the deal to sign the now seemingly Chelsea-bound Marc Cucurella due to Brighton’s asking price which has been deemed a tad too high, a switch for Gomez would make perfect sense for Man City, especially in the long run.
His astute technical ability would be a huge plus as Pep Guardiola loves his full-backs to be highly comfortable on the ball and be able to step into the middle of the park when needed.
Similarly, Gomez would also be a shrewd option should he be deployed in midfield due to his eye for a pass and positional awareness.
