‘Different from his club’ – Spain boss De la Fuente confirms new role for Barcelona star

Spanish national team head coach Luis de la Fuente has confirmed that he intends to utilise a leading member of his squad in something of a new role at this summer’s European Championships.

The player in question? Pedri.

Youngster Pedri, for his part, is fresh off a stellar display on the international front on Saturday.

Afforded a starting berth in his country’s friendly meeting with Northern Ireland, the 21-year-old found the net not once, but twice, acting as the catalyst for an eventual comeback 5-1 triumph.

Not exactly renowned for his goalscoring prowess, as much will no doubt have come as an exciting development for the Spanish fanbase, with a view to Euro 2024.

Speaking to the media in the aftermath of his side’s dominant victory on Saturday evening, it therefore came as little surprise when Pedri’s more advanced role was put to the aforementioned Luis de la Fuente.

And, in his response, La Roja’s boss went on to confirm the Barcelona star’s new position in his XI, a ‘different’ one from his traditional role at club level:

“I want Pedri to play closer to the penalty box. What I’m asking him to do is different than what he does for his club.”
