Hansa Rostock’s relegation from the 2. Bundesliga was sealed on Sunday.
The 2. Bundesliga season came to an end on Sunday, and while it was already clear that St. Pauli and Holstein Kiel would be promoted to the Bundesliga and Fortuna Düsseldorf would finish third for the relegation/promotion play-offs against Bochum, there was still plenty to play for at the other end of the table.
VfL Osnabrück’s relegation was already sealed, but Hansa Rostock and Wehen were locked in a fierce battle to avoid the direct drop.
Sitting one point above Rostock, Wehen had everything in their hands, but ultimately lost 2-1 at home to leaders St. Pauli.
But Hansa Rostock also lost, slipping to a 1-2 defeat against Paderborn, which sealed their relegation to the 3. Liga.
“It’s a difficult moment,” said Hansa Rostock coach Mersad Selimbegović.
“I gave everything and in the end it wasn’t enough. I’m sorry for everyone who cares about this club.”
Wehen now face two relegation/playoff games against Regensburg to decide whether they stay in the 2. Bundesliga.
