Ten Hag now has ‘big decision to make’ on £375k-a-week star

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has ‘a big decision to make’ over David De Gea’s future and a new first choice goalkeeper will not be drafted in if he remains at Old Trafford, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Having mutually agreed to terminate Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract on Tuesday, there are question marks over whether another big-name will be on the Red Devils’ books for much longer.

What’s the latest news involving De Gea?

De Gea is preparing to enter the final six months of his £375,000-per-week contract in January, although Manchester United hold an option to extend the agreement by a year.

It is clear that the Spaniard wants to stay with the Red Devils after insisting the Red Devils ‘is my club’ and he wants to break records by remaining with his current employers.

Speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast, Laurie Whitwell has revealed that De Gea is so desperate to sign fresh terms at Old Trafford that he is willing to discuss a new contract on reduced terms.

However, he could be offered a route back to his homeland as the 32-year-old is reportedly on Barcelona head coach Xavi’s radar.

De Gea was left bemused earlier this month when he was wrongly sent a congratulatory message from the Spanish FA on his retirement from international duty.

What has Dean Jones said about De Gea?

Jones believes Manchester United head coach ten Hag has a key call to make on whether to retain De Gea’s services.

The journalist feels the Red Devils will resist the temptation to sign a world-class shot-stopper if the former Atletico Madrid man stays in the red half of Manchester.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “We’re going to have to wait and see what happens with David De Gea here.

“United have got a big decision to make on that. If De Gea ends up staying, I don’t think anyone else at this level is even going to come in.”

Does De Gea deserve a new contract?

There is no doubt that De Gea has been a wonderful servant since completing a £18.9million switch in 2011, putting in some eye-catching performances along the way.

He has made more than 500 appearances for Manchester United and remained a key man under ten Hag’s tutelage, failing to miss a single minute of Premier League or European action this season.

De Gea has made 38 saves since the top flight campaign got underway in August, although he still averages conceding 1.4 goals per game, a figure which must improve if the Red Devils want to get back to their previous glory days.

If the 45-cap Spain international is willing to lower his wage demands, Manchester United should seriously consider keeping him on board and not allowing him to follow Ronaldo out of the exit door.
