Quentin Merlin and Valentin Rongier leave Marseille’s training camp to sign for Rennes

Marseille left-back Quentin Merlin (23) and his teammate Valentin Rongier (30) have been allowed to leave Les Phocéens’ pre-season Zeist training camp, in the Netherlands, to complete their move to Ligue 1 rivals Rennes, according to reports from RMC Sport and L’Equipe.

Marseille and Rennes reach an agreement in principle for the two FC Nantes Academy products to join Les Canaris‘ Brittany arch-rivals in a €22.5m total transfer package. Rennes were in the market for a left-back after parting ways with club captain Adrien Truffert, who completed a €17m switch to AFC Bournemouth. Merlin will cost Rennes an estimated €13m transfer fee, with Nantes set to bank 10 % of the fee.

As for Rongier, the midfielder was set to enter his final contract year, but the 30-year-old rejected a contract renewal. Marseille already signed Rongier’s potential replacement in Angel Gomes.
