TSG Hoffenheim are leading the race to sign Rennes centre-back Leo Østigård (25), according to a report from L’Equipe. Les Rouge et Noir signed the Norwegian international from Napoli last year in a €7m deal. Østigård was expected to fill the void left by Belgium international centre-back Arthur Theate, but he failed to make his mark and was already on his way out six months in. He joined Bundesliga side Hoffenheim on loan with an option to buy for the second part of the campaign.
Hoffenheim opted not to trigger the option to make Østigård’s loan move permanent, but the Bundesliga side reportedly retained an interest in the player, who did not turn up for Rennes’ preseason as he’s set to leave this summer. An agreement in principle has reportedly been reached between the Ligue 1 side and TSG, but the Bundesliga outfit is understood to wait for the departure of one of their centre-backs, presumably Stanley Nsoki, to ramp up talks with Rennes over Østigård.
