Serie A side Atalanta were held to a goalless draw at home by Celtic but manager Gian Piero Gasperini has praised his team’s performance, despite the team’s disappointing result.
La Dea had a majority of possession throughout the game and they constantly pegged Celtic back into their own half and that is a rare thing in itself. But Atalanta could never really find a final ball, as it let them down and made sure that they never carved out too many clear cut opportunities, even if Mario Pasalic smacked the post in the first half.
After the game, Gasperini spoke to Sky Italia about the game and he hailed how his team pushed Celtic deeper, even if it didn’t lead to a result.
The Italian said, as relayed by TuttoAtalanta:
“In Venice we had facilitated to have unlocked the game immediately, which did not happen to us this evening. I had never seen Celtic so perched and closed, in terms of consistency we had a good game. We lacked quality.”
It is the second game of the competition that Atalanta should have won, apart from their game against Arsenal some weeks ago, when Matteo Retegui had missed a vital penalty.
Whether they live to regret these dropped points remains to be seen.
