Chelsea now ‘in discussions’ over £30m star leaving Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are currently in discussions to terminate Denis Zakaria‘s loan in January, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The midfielder only joined the Blues in the last transfer window but is yet to play a single minute for them.

Why did Chelsea sign Zakaria?

Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel ran into some problems with his midfield early in the season.

This term, both N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic have had injury problems. In fact, the former recently suffered a setback in training ahead of making a return to first-team action.

“It is not ideal, and certainly disappointing for both him and for us,” Tuchel’s successor Graham Potter said in a recent press conference.

With Kante proving unreliable, Chelsea and Tuchel decided to sign Zakaria from Juventus just before the transfer window closed, bringing him in on loan with an option to buy. It is believed that they can sign the 25-year-old permanently for £30m.

What has Phillips said about Zakaria and Chelsea?

Phillips has told GIVEMESPORT that Chelsea are ready to cut Zakaria’s season-long loan short.

Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: “He’s not really shown enough match fitness yet to get any game time. But as well as that, discussions are taking place right now at Chelsea regarding terminating his loan move in January, so this would suggest it is not going to plan right now.”

Will Chelsea go through with it?

At this stage, it looks very likely. Zakaria is by no means a bad footballer, with Borussia Monchengladbach legend Gunter Netzer hailing him in the past for being a really good team player.

“He is enormously valuable because he plays for the team,” Netzer told BILD (via Planet Football). “Players like him play a part in the success of many teams. They do the dirty work for others.”

However, while Tuchel may have wanted him, it is clear that Zakaria is not in Potter’s plans, with the Englishman preferring the likes of Kovacic, Jorginho and Ruben Loftus-Cheek over the Switzerland international.

Perhaps an injury to one of the trio or Conor Gallagher could change things, but unless that happens, it is hard to see Zakaria getting minutes at Stamford Bridge this season based on Potter’s team selections so far.

And when Kante’s finally fit again, the games he is available to play, you would expect Zakaria to also be behind him in the midfield pecking order.
