Barcelona chief explained club’s decision not to move for Man United-bound Amorim

Quotes on the part of Barcelona sporting director Deco, surrounding the potential appointment of Rúben Amorim, have resurfaced online this week.

This, of course, comes as Amorim prepares to take up the reins at Premier League giants Manchester United.

Portuguese tactician Amorim, according to widespread reports, has reached an agreement to replace Erik ten Hag in the dugout at Old Trafford.

As much will bring to an end what was a hugely successful stint on the books of Sporting CP in his home country.

One individual, however, who was not yet quite convinced of Amorim’s readiness to take over at one of the continent’s leading clubs, comes in the form of the aforementioned Deco.

Speaking in an interview with ‘Nascer do Sol’ earlier this year after word was forthcoming that Xavi would not continue on the Barcelona bench, Deco was asked about the possibility of appointing his fellow countryman.

The Blaugrana chief, as cited by Diario Sport, however, pointed towards Amorim’s age (he is just 39) and inexperience as sources of concern:

“A Portuguese coach? How many Portuguese coaches are prepared for the weight and responsibility of taking charge of Barcelona, especially this Barcelona with all the difficulties that entails? I know that Rúben Amorim is doing a good job at Sporting and that, in addition, he plays with a similar style to ours, but he also has very little experience.”
